Fortune Lions Club

Lionism came to the Burin Peninsula by way of the Grand Bank-Fortune Lions Club in 1951 when a group of citizens representing both towns believed there was a need for such a club in the area without religious or political affiliation. Immediately, it became involved in the affairs of both communities. From 1951 to 1970, this Club served both towns.

In 1970, the Fortune Lions Club was organized under the sponsorship of the Grand Bank-Fortune Lions Club. At the time of its charter, the Fortune Lions Club had 32 members. During the first few years of its operation, the members of the Club met in various places around Fortune, as the Club had no building of its own. But through a lot of hard work and a mortgage of $62,000, a new building was opened in 1973.

In the years that followed, the members became involved in numerous projects in the town, the District, and Lions International, and have received several awards for its outstanding work. The Club became well known for its collections and donations to various organizations.

Indeed, the Fortune Lions Club has a very proud record of service to its town. In more recent years, the Club has built an extension to their building and in the next year or so hope to have it paid for. This extension is used for Lions meetings and by the senior citizens of the town. In the not too distant future, the Club will apply for the sponsorship of two more senior citizens non-profit housing units.

From its inception in 1970 to the present day, the Club has strived to serve its town. Its members today are ever so grateful to the men that were so service-minded to help build the Club it is today.
