Our role in the Falmouth and Penryn community

We support the Falmouth/Penryn community by offering help to charities and other good causes. This support comes in the way of human resource (actual bodily help) or financial (grants), or even a mixture of both.

Any appropriate organisation in the Falmouth/Penryn area qualifies for our help; just let us know if you have a problem

Send an e-mail to falmouthandpenrynlions@gmail.com

with the following details:

  1. Name of Organisation
  2. Secretary's name, address and telephone number
  3. Details of what you do and
  4. Say why you need help.

Examples of how we help

Besides supporting good causes financially we provide people power. You will find us helping out or as marshals in many local events like

  • Falmouth Carnival,
  • Penryn Carnival,
  • Falmouth Flower Show,
  • the Moonlight Memory Walk,
  • the Santa Fun Run (where a couple of us have also run),
  • Falmouth Half Marathon (which one of us even managed to finish once),
  • the Gorsedh, held in Penryn in 2013,
  • Rowland's Fair Day.

You will also find us doing stuff at the following events:

  • running stalls at local shows, including the Royal Cornwall and the Mylor Fair, where we are often tirelessly making bacon or sausage baps; we also provided bacon or sausage baps for late night shopping in Falmouth in the lead up to Christmas,
  • we are busy (but not seen) at Falmouth's annual Flower Show, not exhibiting our blooms, but helping assemble and paint the stands. Behind the scenes is one of our specialities. You might just see a couple of us on the door.
  • from time to time you might even see our mascot, Leonardo, if he has escaped from his handlers. Do not be afraid, he's toothless and cross-eyed.

In addition,

  • we'll happily accept sponsorship to take part in events to support particular charities,
  • we can be seen at Aldi helping raise funds for the Royal British Legion through their poppies,
  • one of us was a Gamesmakers at the 2012 Olympics (he had a great time),
  • two of us were involved driving RIBs during the 2014 Tall Ships event,
  • and helping out similar organisations like Rotary.

Some of our support goes to youth activities, like the local Sea Cadets, Falmouth Rugby Club and the annual Youth Cricket Festival, held at St Gluvias Cricket Club.

At Easter-time we have an Easter Egg raffle based in a number of local pubs and hostelries wich this year raised around £800 which was shared between the two Cornish Hospices.

Every year we organise the Tide Race at Gyllyngvase Beach, where teams of up to eight build and defend a huge pile of sand against the incoming tide. This hugely popular participation and spectator sport, suitable for all ages, helps raise money for local charities. It is supported by the Gyllyngvase Beach Cafe, who generously provide the prizes. Some years we were also visited by one of the helicopters from RNAS Culdrose, duties and weather permitting.
