Racing the Tide: Canute likely to lose (again)!

The 2016 tide race was held at Gyllyngvase Beach, on August 28th, at a slightly earlier time than previous years. It's all to do with those pesky tides. This year digging began at 11:00.

Registration, from 10:00,  for a mere £1 per person (maximum 8 persons per team). Teams of friends and family brought their own spades, shovels, pails, buckets and seaweed. Prizes were generously donated by Gylly Beach Cafe.

Each team built a castle to withstand the incoming tide. As the tide approaches, all team members stand on their castles. Once a team member falls/slides off the castle that team retires. The last entire team left standing wins.

Although the total number of teams was down this year, all worked their socks off building impressive platforms from which to defy the tide. Although each team had up to 8 members, team sizes ranged from 2 to 8, and contestants ages ranged from 3 to considerably more than that! The well prepared came with spades, shovels and (big) buckets.

Winners of the 2016 Falmouth Tide Race. Thanks to the Beach Cafe for the prizes.
