Lions For Life

When West One surgery voiced the need for a defibrillator that was accessible to the public 24/7, the Lions of Crewkerne sprang into action. Through a mixture of fund raising events such as the Swimathon; the Pirates of the Caribbean Night and the Duck Race; together with donations made in memory of Fred Broom senior, the target of £2,750 was reached.

The lifesaving piece of equipment has been placed on the wall of the West One building. It is the first of its kind in the town. “Even on a very good response, an ambulance will take at least 10 minutes and that could be stretched even to over an hour at other times. Having this close to hand could mean the difference between life and death”, a member of the surgery staff commented.

“It’s great to know that this is available whenever needed by the people of Crewkerne”, Lion Wendy Broom said.

Dr. Osborne told the Lions that the company that produced the equipment has pledged to replace the batteries whenever it is used and if it saves a person’s life, they will donate another machine to be placed where the saved person is from.

Recognising the importance of access to these machines, Lions across the country are putting defibrillators in schools, public phone boxes and other readily available places.

Crewkerne Lions are now busy fund raising for their next life-saving device, a pod used to safely transport babies in the new Air Ambulance being built at Westlands, serving people in this district. This is being done with the Tree of Lights, a 20’ Christmas tree located outside The Antiques Bazaar, Kit Hill, covered in white lights. People are asked to sponsor a light in memory of a person that is no longer with us. “It is giving people a positive way to make gift on behalf of their loved one that will benefit the lives of others”. People who sponsor lights will be sent a card inviting them to a special lighting up ceremony and the person who is being remembered will be placed on the Roll of Honour next to the tree. For further details please contact Anthony Bucke at the Antiques Bazaar or contact Lion Lesley Chudley on 01460 72305

Lions seen at Abbey Hill steam rally Yeovil

Despite the weather large numbers of people came to the 4 day event at Yeovil Showground, including 9 schools on the Friday. With Lloyds Pharmacy providing Diabetes screening; blood pressure tests and alcohol awareness, the Lions promoted eye care; M in a B; the Plugster , the measles programme; as well Youth Projects an what it means to be a part of the greatest service organisation in the world.

6 schools have shown interest in taking part in the Peace Poster; 2 young people have fulfilled their hours of service to be awarded a YLiS Gold Award; 2 large secondary schools have requested information regarding YLiS and a parish council that runs a youth council; a Young Ambassador candidate has been identified and in all ways Lionism was given a positive image.

Thanks must go to Crewkerne Lions, particularly Lion Cecil Turner and the Bussell family for initiating this event and securing a prime location for our 10x3m stand, right next to the main ring. Also to the Lions from Ilminster and Glastonbury and Street who supported us.

Apart from the cost of petrol to get to the event and time, this event cost the Lions NOTHING!

Mazarron Bahia Lions Club Lorca Appeal

In early 2011 the town of Lorca in Spain was devastated by an earthquake. The town centre consisted of largely mediaeval buildings which were either destroyed or severely damaged. One of the buildings in the town was a school for handicapped children who could not attend normal schools. The school was attended each week by over 200 young people from the area who were devastated to discover that following the quake the school was not to be rebuilt. In stepped the Lions clubs of the area and pledged to build a purpose built school in a new location.

When Lions from Crewkerne visited our  twin club Mazarron Bahia Lions for a holiday in August 2011  they pledged the clubs support to the tune of £1000. On their return the club raised this amount in a short space of time and as a result  Crewkerne President Lion Nicky Bussell was able to present a cheque to our twin Clubs President Nigel Barker at their charter evening in February 2012.
