Colombo Lions Club Now known as the Lions Club of Colombo (Host) inaugurated in April 1958 is the First Lions Club in Sri Lanka.

We have just stepped into our 60th year of service with the promise of living up to our motto 'We Serve' We will continue with our biggest service project to date, the Hope for Children project and have embarked on yet another project that would provide over 70 families in rural Sri Lanka with pipe borne water. We will continue to support our long standing continuous projects of sponsoring the Sewing School for underprivileged girls and the pride of our club; the Leo Club of Colombo Host.

A little bit more about our work

The first project successfully completed by this pioneering club was the introduction of the White Cane to assist the Blind with 500 White Canes being distributed to the Sight-impaired. More importantly, the club successfully lobbied for the enactment of legislation to make it an offence for motor traffic not to permit the safe passage of any person using a White Cane. The legislation was finally enacted on 13th February 1959 as part of the Motor Traffic Act No. 14 of 1951.

Later projects included the first Eye Bank in Sri Lanka, gifted to the National Eye Hospital in 1962. It was later supplemented by the Eye Bank of the Eye Donation Society organized by the late Lion Dr. Hudson Silva and developed into an internationally renowned Cornea Resource. Other early projects were the inauguration of a weekly Medical Clinic staffed by the doctor members of the Club, assisted by lay members.

This includes constructing and maintaining a chalet at the Camilla School, Sight for 1000 program carried out in the 90s, sponsoring the Leo Club of Colombo Host, organizing the Lions Quiz Night, setting up a sewing school to train underprivileged young women and numerous other projects over the ages. In our 50th year we launched the Gift of Sight program dedicated to assist underprivileged persons to have their sight restored by sponsoring their cataract operations. We also sponsored the design & construction of a water system to provide a village in Pannila with pipe borne drinking water and thousands have been assisted through our numerous health camps.

The Lion Ladies have always been the backbone of our club their strong and silent support has not only given our club a firm grounding to move forward, they have also been the main fundraisers. ‘Eve’ (coffee morning) was the signature project of the Lions Ladies of Colombo Host that raised much needed funds to our coffers. Over time they orgainsed several Christmas/ Avurudu Sale and last year organized the much publicized Car Boot Sale, the first of it’s kind to be held in Colombo.

As we step into our 60th year, we are fully aware that our work is yet not done ! We march forward with a purpose keeping in mind the changing landscape of Lions Service in the next century.
