Who are the Lions

Melvin Jones and insurance man formed the first Lions Club in Chicago June 17, 1917.

International status for Lions was attained with the formation of the Boarder Cities Lions Club in the city of Windsor on March 1920. This club is now known as the Windsor Downtown Lions Club.

During that year, many clubs were formed in Ontario (including Toronto and London Central) and District "A" became the first district outside of the United States. Over the years, as more clubs were formed, additional districts were required and thus in 1938, District A-1, A-2 and A-3 were formed creating Multiple District "A".

District A-1 is located in Southwestern Ontario and covers an area roughly from London to Windsor and from Lake Erie to the southern tip of Georgian Bay. Presently there are 50 clubs in the district raising funds and working for their communities.

Contributions in this district vary from a couple of hundred dollars for the needy to thousands of dollars for charities, leader dogs, hearing ear dogs, special skills dogs and eye programs. Lions in District A-1 have supplied the funds to build health centers in rural communities, Scout Halls, Retirement Homes and to supply much needed equipment to hospitals. District A-1 came together with several other districts to provide over $250,000 to help build Ronald MacDonald House in London.

Ailsa Craig & District Lions Club was formed in May 1971 with 30 members. Ailsa Craig & district Lions Club funded the pavilion at the ball park, raised over $50,000 for the Recreation Center, raised funds for the Lions Park and soccer field, shed and pavilion. We raised over $10,000 for aid in a fire disaster and a child cancer survivor. The Lions clubs of Ailsa Craig, Arkona, Granton, Lucan and Parkhill raised funds twice to purchase vans for the Ailsa Craig Food Bank. The club also raised over $4600.00 for the new Medical Centre in Ailsa Craig. Ailsa Craig & District Lions Club has donated to Minor Hockey, Minor Soccer, Parkhill silver Blades, East Williams School Music Program, Scouts, Cubs and many individuals requiring assistance with their various endeavors.

Alisa Craig Lions are people just like you who have a few hours a month to contribute to our neighbours. We would love to have you help us on our journey.
